Sony RX 100 Mark III

You may have heard of the Sony RX 100 when it first came out.  It made a big splash since it was basically the best point and shoot “IN the WORLD” (as Clarkson on Top Gear would say).  Certain photographers were left wishing for a viewfinder that didn’t require buying a 400$ accessory, a faster lens and a couple other tidbits like an articulating screen.  Well, guess what? The RX 100 Mark III is now here and it has taken the best point and shoot in the world and made it the best point and shoot in the known universe.  How you say? Well for one, it has added all of the features I just mentioned.  It comes with a built in EVF, 20.1 MP 1″ sensor,  a full 180 degree articulated screen with a 24-70mm zeiss lens that goes from F1.8 to F2.8  up to F11.  That is SICK.  For something that fits in your pocket that just blows my mind.  Did I mention I want one for Christmas? Here in Canada its around $900 at its current street price.  If anyone wants to grab me one I’d be eternally in your debt lol.

It’s no slouch in the video department either.  While auto focus struggles a bit it has full HD 1920 x 1080 which is basically standard these days.  What isn’t standard these days, is the XAVC S format which lets you record 29 min at 50Mbps at 1080/60p, 1080/24p and 720/120p.  That’s damn sexy.  I believe the Sony action cam can do this as well which is another thing on my wish list :).  Compression is your typical mpeg – 4 avc/h.264.  Honestly though, the amount of stuff they managed to cram into this pocket rocket is ridiculous.

So there are obviously some drawbacks.  While the 1 inch sensor isn’t small compared to other point and shoots, its no full frame DSLR (or mirrorless) either.  99% of the time I will be taking the full frame Canon even if its just for a walk around a nearby lake or something.  But the thing is… there is always that 1% … that time when all you want to do is just toss a QUALITY camera (yes phones are great these days but not quite there yet) in your pocket and leave the backpack at home.  For those times, I can’t think of a better camera that would do the job than this.  Does this 1% warrant $900? I guess that depends. If you got a badass rig already the answer is no, its just a want.  But on the flip side, there are times when a small, virtually invisible (I should say unnoticeable) camera would be better and, again this one would be the best choice as of now.

Ultimately, all I really have to say about this beauty is “I WANT NAO!”

Thanks for reading! If you are heading to the store to buy one grab one for me too haha :)!
