I recently ran across a fantastic YouTube channel, Perea Photography, who touched on a subject that I am currently undertaking myself. That is, of course, the struggles of turning your images into a functioning, profitable business.
The lessons to take away from the video are very straightforward and I believe anyone who is pursuing this journey should hear them at least once. Taking great photos and being able to edit them to bring out even more of their potential is just step 1 of many. In order for your business to take off, you need to sharpen a whole laundry list of skills and abilities to truly succeed. Some of the most important, in my opinion, are being able to market yourself and your product, analyze trends, learn SEO and coding to refine your website (my own addition), and be able to close your sales. Most of all, you have to retain your artistry and your integrity while focusing on a business model that is most likely only 10% working your craft.
Of course, this does not apply only to photography. These truths apply to any business centered around an artistic medium. It is a harsh reality and a difficult pursuit in an oversaturated market. However, if this is the passion you wish to build your life around, this video will serve more as a motivator rather than a deterrent.
